In addition, the MHA of Columbia-Greene Counties is participating in a County wide initiative (Columbia County) working with all of the behavioral health providers in developing and achieving criteria of providing services to people with co-occurring disorders that would be in line with national evidence based standards. These standards were initially developed by the American Society of Addictions Medicine (ASAM). The completion of this project will result in each agency having met standards to be considered “Capable” of providing a full range of services to the individual with co-occurring disorders, transforming the experience of the recipient from receiving psychiatric and substance abuse services in a parallel context to one in which s/he is receiving services concurrently. Each agency will be capable of providing at least basic services for both mental health and substance abuse, for most individuals presenting with co-occurring disorders.
